Shelly Beach - Hervey Bay

Friday, September 30th, 2005

The middle of the day isn’t the only time to hit the beach. Late afternoon and right on sunset is a great time to be on the beach too.

Here’s a shot taken at our favourite spot at Shelly Beach - it’s a great place to enjoy some fish and chips from the Shelly Beach Seafood - I love their Barra :)

Hervey Bay Monster Swap Meet

Friday, September 30th, 2005

It’s going to be a big weekend here in Hervey Bay this weekend. Already there are plenty of ‘No Vacancy’ signs out and there are lots of tourists around. The weather is looking good, the beach is just calling, although the water might still be a little cold and there’s just no excuse to stay indoors this weekend.

Also this weekend the annual Hervey Bay Monster Swap Meet and Collectibles Fair is on down at the sports ground in Bideford Street. The site opens tonight at 5pm and goes through until Sunday with the gates opening at 6am on Saturday and Sunday.

A special attraction on Saturday will be a display of veteran and vintage cars and motorcycles and on Sunday there will be a display by Fraser Coast Four Wheel Drive Club and the Ford enthusiast’s club.

Your fearless scribe and his bargain hunting companion will be there and I’m sure we’ll have some photos for you next week.

Playing Hookey in Hervey Bay

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

What a beautiful day it has been today. Warm sunshine, a gentle breeze and that was the perfect excuse to sneak away from the home-office and grab a coffee at our favourite cafe. With at least 17 cafes and coffee shops along The Esplanade you simply have no excuse for not getting out and enjoying some of the great cafe atmosphere in this beautiful city.

And if you haven’t found the coffee that best suits your taste then take a tip from us and try the Bayaroma. The coffee and cake, and meals are the best in town and the staff are wonderful.

Now all I have to do is explain to the boss why I wasn’t at my desk this morning.

Oh wait … she was there at the cafe too.

Whew that had me worried for a moment - she-who-must-be-obeyed is not one to argue with :)

Man Injured on Fraser Island

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

The dangers inherent in riding in the back of utilities and trucks was demonstrated yesterday when a man was thrown from the back of a 4WD on Fraser Island.

The vehicle hit soft sand throwing the man clear. Unfortunately there was no soft sand where he landed and he sustained serious head injuries in the accident. He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being evacuated to Hervey Bay hospital and subsequently flown to Brisbane.

Computer Fashion Statements

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

If you’re reading this then you obviously have some interest in computers because you’re using one right now. For many years computers were a bit like Model T Fords, you could have any colour as long as it was grey and you could have any design of computer case as long as it was plain.

But those days have gone and those plain cases that enclose the working parts of your computer are on the way to becoming fashion statements. For some time there have been different colours available and some attempt was made to change the look of the box but now some rather scary looking boxes are beginning to invade Hervey Bay.

The guardian computer case - available at Fraser Coast Computers at Urangan

This monster sits on the desk that one half of our team hires three days a week. It’s called The Guardian and I can’t make up my mind whether it’s trying to be friendly and is smiling at me or it’s about to devour me.

If you think this box is state of the art call in to Fraser Coast Computers on The Esplanade at Urangan and ask to see the hand-painted state of the art gaming machine Rick has just put together down there. After having the box sprayed with a paint that changes colour depending on the angle you view it from Rick now has it on display for all to drool over.

Hervey Bay Airport

Monday, September 26th, 2005

Council representatives from Port Macquarie paid a visit to Hervey Bay in late July to investigate how Hervey Bay had gone about the development of the airport and attracted Jetstar to the town.

It seems that Port Macquarie is very interested in developing their runway and airport to allow bigger planes to fly into the town and the Council representatives came to Hervey Bay to see what they could learn from our experience.

End of the School Holidays

Monday, September 26th, 2005

It’s the first day of the new term in Queensland schools and the Hervey Bay caravan parks were looking a little on the empty side yesterday as people headed home.

While Queensland kids go back to school today NSW kids are just starting their holidays but, unlike previous years, we may not see those empty spaces filled by interstate visitors. As the price of fuel begins to bite deep into the pockets of every person in Australia we can expect to see it affect tourist numbers here.

However, Hervey Bay may not be as badly affected as some areas because of our proximity to Brisbane. A short drive to a very appealing holiday destination will still be attractive to any family who does want to get away from it all.

And while we can offer them scenes like this:

Torquay Beach

the tourists are definitely going to keep on coming.

Urangan Beach Front

Monday, September 26th, 2005

This weekend was just too beautiful to spend shut inside in front of the computer so the siren song of the beach and the bay soon lured us away and this time we wandered down to Urangan.

One one side of the shared path was a view like this:

The beach at Urangan

It’s beautiful and idyllic and undoubtedly one of the reasons why so many people have moved to this great city.

Turning around we’re confronted with this view:

Urangan construction

It’s ugly and grubby and even when it’s built it’s not going to improve the streetscape.

So Ted and every other elected representative on the Hervey Bay Council use the comments section of this piece to explain why on God’s green earth Hervey Bay needs a mess like this.

And tell us why you’re giving our heritage away to people who don’t live here.
