Update on Attack on Australian Soldiers in Southern Iraq

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Yesterday, the Chief of Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston advised that Australian soldiers serving in Southern Iraq were engaged by Anti-Iraqi Forces and that an intense exchange of fire ensued.

The incident occurred on 26 September whilst elements of the Overwatch Battle Group (West) [OBG(W)] were conducting a meeting at an Iraqi Army Barracks in Al Rumaythah in Al Muthanna Province.

The attack lasted almost an hour and appeared to be well coordinated, including rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire.

The Australian soldiers withdrew from the area - under considerable fire - without loss of life, injury or serious damage to equipment and vehicles.

The Commander of OBG(W), Lieutenant Colonel Mick Mahy said that the soldiers “acted with great discipline, exceptional courage and used well executed tactics” to safely withdraw from the area.

The initial assessment indicates that a number of Anti-Iraqi Forces were wounded in the incident, but there have been no reports of civilian death or injury.

The Bushmaster and ASLAV vehicles played a crucial role in protecting the soldiers and allowing them to safely disengage from the contact and move to safety.

In relation to the current public commentary and the suggestion that not enough protection is available to those firing from the vehicle, during discussion after the action one soldier commented that if he had a gun plate installed on the vehicle, he might not have been able to fire as effectively due to it restricting his view.

The vehicle has been designed to operate in a wide range of operational situations and, that said, these matters are the subject of constant review.

Attacks of this nature against Coalition Forces have been conducted in other parts of Iraq and Al Muthanna Province; however this is the first instance of such a sustained and coordinated attack being conducted against Australian forces.

Air Chief Marshal Houston said this incident was a reminder of the dangerous environment in which Australian Forces are operating in Iraq and Afghanistan and that it illustrates the superb leadership, training and equipment that Australian soldiers receive in preparation for these operations.

Defence is concerned that emails purporting to be from soldiers involved in the incident are being mailed to the media.  E-mails read by Defence officials this afternoon are clearly not from soldiers involved in the contact.

The detail in these emails is grossly inaccurate in terms of scale, location and description of the incident.  The e-mails do no service to our soldiers who performed admirably, with great restraint and professionalism.

Real Estate Agents - We’re Not Happy Jan

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Real estate agents came in as the second worst cause of complaints about fair trading matters in Hervey Bay during the financial year ended June 2006

Personal and household goods topped the list of matters referred to the Office of Fair Trading in Hervey Bay, Minister for Fair Trading Margaret Keech said today.

Mrs Keech said Hervey Bay residents were continuing to stand up for their rights, lodging 258 complaints with the Office of Fair Trading during the 2005-2006 financial year.

“During this same time period 11,500 complaints were dealt with across Queensland, which included some that were carried over from the previous financial year,” Mrs Keech said.

“Personal and household goods had the most complaints in Hervey Bay followed by reports against Real Estate Agents and motor vehicle sales.

“Gambling and scams were also high on the list.”

Mrs Keech said this year the Beattie Government introduced strengthened laws to provide even more consumer protections to clean up these industries.

“While the majority of businesses do the right thing, there are those who give their industry a bad name by being dishonest.

“The Office of Fair Trading’s jurisdiction covers a wide range of industries. In the 2005-2006 financial year it monitored around 30,000 businesses to ensure they were operating within the law and consequently, took enforcement action in 3,000 instances.”

If you would like to lodge a complaint or require more information about making a complaint call the Office of Fair Trading on 13 13 04, or go to www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au.

Changes to Flights into Hervey Bay

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Tomorrow, Sept 30, sees the end of Sunshine Express flights into Hervey Bay and Maryborough. The airline has already painted over all of it’s signage on their planes’ empanages as it prepares to withdraw from route work entirely and concentrate on charter operations.

QantasLink has brought forward its planned entry into the Hervey Bay market and will commence operations from Sunday. Unfortunately Maryborough will no longer have a regular air service to anywhere.

Top Toys for Christmas

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Just in case you missed it we’re happy to spread the joy and tell you that there is now less than three months to Christmas. We can sound smug about that because our Christmas shopping for our kids and grandkids is almost complete.

But if you’re still wondering what to get then maybe the hot 15 list from Toys “R” Us in the United States may help.

Blue Man Group Percussion Tubes from ToyQuest®
Designer’s World™ from Tiger® Games
Dora’s Talking Cash Register™ from Fisher-Price®
ESPN® Fast Action Football™ from Fisher-Price®
Kid-Tough™ Digital Camera from Fisher-Price®
Laugh & Learn™ Baby Grand Piano from Fisher-Price®
Mindstorms® NXT from LEGO®

Speed Stacks® StackPack® from Play Along®

Just in case you missed them you will find a digital camera and a laptop computer (in pink of course) hiding in that list. There’s even something that looks like a trainset … but somehow I don’t quite see that as being anything like the Hornby trainsets that were so popular when I was a kid.

But then you really shouldn’t give your kids trainsets - my parents made that mistake when I was seven or eight and I’m still addicted to playing with trains :)

Urangan Pier Festival

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Sunday October 1 is the day for this year’s Pier Festival down at Urangan Pier.

Activities get under way from 6am when the fishing competition starts. Food stalls should be open by 7am and there will be further activities and things to see throughout the day. There will also be craft stalls, a flea market and even a licensed bar running through till about 2pm.

The first Pier Festival was held in 1986 to help raise funds to save Urangan Pier but proceeds from this weekend’s event will go to the Fraser Coast Lions Club and local charities.

Urangan Pier was originally built to a length of 1107 metres in 1917 but is now only 720 metres in length. Urangan Pier was originally built to facilitate the export of coal and sugar from the local area and the last vessel to use the pier departed in 1985.

Swim With Caution

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin has warned swimmers to be aware of sharks with the arrival of warmer weather.

“With the weather warming up and school holidays underway, people are not the only ones becoming more active in Queensland’s waterways,'’ Mr Mulherin said.

“The warmer and wetter weather means Queensland’s shark activity is also on the rise.

“People need to remember that sharks are a natural part of the marine environment and when we enter the water we are entering their domain,” Mr Mulherin said.

“People should avoid swimming near river mouths, in canals, artificial lakes and waterways, particularly early in the morning, evening and at night.

The Minister in particular warned about the dangers posed by bull whaler sharks and while you may look at the waters in Hervey Bay and think that they look to tranquil to hide anything as nasty as a shark bull whalers are often caught in the waters around the end of Urangan Pier.

Has Hervey Bay Become Unaffordable?

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

It seems that the Urban Development Institute of Australia seems to think so and has named Mackay and Hervey Bay as the only two property markets in Queensland where house prices have reached the point of being ‘unaffordable’ for young home buyers.

A Heart Starter I Didn’t Need

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

It’s easy to be fooled into thinking that living in Hervey Bay is just like living in the suburbs of a big city. There are plenty of houses around you and in many places you can’t actually see the bush so it’s easy to forget that Hervey Bay is still basically a country town with a lot of wild animals living all around it.

That was brought home to me yesterday morning. I had been working away on some text for a client and needed a little break while inspiration returned so I went for a wander around the backyard. As usual I was barefoot because the feel of grass on bare feet is one of the real pleasures in life.

But it’s going to be a while before I go bare foot in my yard again because I nearly trod on a snake.

Fortunately said snake was already dead but it took me a little while to realise that.

Hervey Bay - Bursting at the Seams

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

It’s now official, Hervey Bay is not just one of the top five growth centres in Australia; we are now the third fastest grown city in the country with thousands of people moving to Hervey Bay every year.

Of course, those of us who live here could see that. After all it’s hard to miss the new housing developments, the expanding retail and commercial sites and the infrastructure work that is going on all over town.

I guess so many people just can’t be wrong - Hervey Bay really is a great place to live and work.
