Hervey Bay to Fraser Island

Hey fellas can somebody please put that fire out?

The smoke is getting rather thick and unpleasant over here and it’s been burning for over a week now.

I work over on the Island and have tried to get some information regarding the fires - nobody seems to know a great deal or perhaps I’ve been asking the wrong people.

Apparantly the fires are burning in areas that are very difficult to access and are not threatening any areas on the Island. However, there is the expectation that they will burn out due to the change in wind direction as they will burn back on themselves, but it really only seems to be getting worse (smoke wise).

They don’t currently pose a threat to anyone on the Island but surely they can’t be good for the place (or the little critters in the area), not to mention the huge amounts of carbon pouring into our atmosphere.

If I get more info, I’ll let you know.

Thanks for that info Nina - I know that over here the smoke really is bad and it must be affecting people who have breathing problems.

Yesterday cars around the Boat Harbour and even as far up as the Centro car park were being covered in ash.

Thanks for the info, I could not find any one who knew where and what was burning. I knew that there was a fire on Fraser but that was over a week ago and I found that out by overhearing someone at the petrol station.

Hi Tricia - as far as I know the fire started over on Fraser Island as a result of those storms that came through the Wednesday before last and it’s been burning ever since.

On Thursday morning around 7am the smoke was so thick that you couldn’t see Fraser Island from Aquavue at Torquay and usually a lot of the coast line is visible from there.

    They are almost out.

I have since found out that there have been at least 10 firefighters fighting around the clock for over a week. They have been working on 3 day shifts and are absolutely stuffed.

I was lucky enough to run into 3 fireman coming off shift - covered in ash and exhausted.

Like I mentioned above, fighting these fires has been no easy feat. They have been in really hard to access areas of the Island and there haven’t been too many staff to go around.

Thanks for adding that extra information Nina :)
