Over the last couple of weeks while we’ve been down having coffee at Aquavue we’ve occasionally noticed a large splash in one particular spot some way out in the bay as some large fish has breached … but we never had a good look at what it was that was breaching.
Then early last week we were watching a paddler as he or she paddled across the bay. In about the same spot that we saw the breaches we noticed the paddler fall into the water. We were surprised at just how quickly they got back into their kayak and even more surprised to see them head towards the shore at a great pace.
Today, Marcus from Aquavue told us that he had been out in about the same spot late last week and come across two big Manta Rays. Manta Rays, even small ones, are big - with an average width of 6.7 metres - so it was no wonder that paddler headed for the shore at such a fast pace.
The Florida Museum of Natural History has some interesting Manta Ray photos and details and you can find them here
