Election Time - Time for Spin and Associated BS

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Don’t you just love election time? That’s the time when politicians can an increase in interest rates into a sigh of good government - when increasing costs mean we have less money for the essentials of life and yet Australian families have never had it so good - when being flexible with employment and business means the destruction of the Australian way of life.

Yep - spin … you’ve just gotta laugh or otherwise you would have to cry at the way this great country is going to the dogs!

And have you noticed that spin is the first line of defence for more than just politicians these days?

The New York Times recently reported on two clinical trials of a new drug that went horribly wrong. A drug that was supposed to improve good cholesterol levels seemed to have a rather negative effect - 93 patients in the trial group died as opposed to 59 in the placebo group. So how could you spin something like that?

“The two trials together seem to tell us that (the drug) had an off-target effect”

The spin? Death = ‘off-target’.

Now if you would like to engage in some spin to cover up your mistakes - perhaps something that the Hervey Bay City Council needs to consider - then here is a link just for you.

Night Roadworks for Hervey Bay

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

Roadworks being carried out at night is not something that we often see here in Hervey Bay but they will occur from November 11 at the intersection of Boat Harbour Drive and Central Avenue.

Now You Have It, Now You Don’t

Monday, November 5th, 2007

A month ago Rex - otherwise known as Regional Express - began it’s direct flights from Maryborough to Brisbane. Today they’ve announced that they have suspended all flights till March next year.

It seems that the airline doesn’t have enough pilots to cover the route.

So if you live in Maryborough and you want to fly to Brisbane you’re going to have to drive to Hervey Bay first.

Some Harsh Words for Garry Parr

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

Some very harsh words have been levelled at our wannabe (but never will be) local member Garry Parr and sadly he deserves every one of them. God knows what the Labor Party was thinking of when they picked him for a candidate.

You can read what one writer in the Sydney Morning Herald had to say about the person who would represent the people of Hervey Bay here.

A couple of weeks ago he called the parents of a serving soldier ‘war mongers’. He seems to forget that:

Soldiers and their families do not commit a nation to war - that is the job of politicians. But soldiers are a necessary part of keeping us safe.

Perhaps he should wake up to what it’s like to be a parent of a serving soldier - quite frankly there are no bigger pacifists than those of us who stand to lose our children.

Cold Rock is Hot Business

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

The latest business to open in Hervey Bay is the Cold Rock Ice Creamery on the corner of Main Street and Boat Harbour Drive.

While it might look rather quiety around 9am on a Sunday morning when it’s open the queue can be out the door.

As you can see from this photo, even at 9am on a Sunday morning people are waiting for the shop to open.

Centro Hervey Bay Extensions

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

By now you’re probably aware that the long-awaited extenstions to Centro Hervey Bay have begun but you may not be aware of just how extensive those extensions are.

When they’re finished Centro will extend right across to Main Street as you can see from these two shots of the preliminary earth works that are currently underway.

Both photos were taken from the intersection of Main Street and McLiver Street.

Should a Local Council Be in Business

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Should the Hervey Bay Council be involved in the commercial world of business? It past performances are anything to go on then perhaps we the ratepayers would be better served if Hervey Bay City Council stuck to the business of trying to run Hervey Bay.

Strewth took an interesting look at three attempts our Council has made to make money from business before the site was removed from the Web due to legal action.
