A Smelly Problem on Fraser Island

What do you do with 25 tonnes of rotting flesh and it’s in an inaccessible area?

Well if you’re the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service you’re not going to want to do much about it at all because to move a dead whale of that size … oh and it’s about 13 metres long … is going to be very expensive.

The only problem is that 25 tonnes of dead rotting whale is really going to be on the nose and people can smell it up to 7km away and right now there are plenty of people on Fraser Island who are downwind of it.. Understandably the locals want it moved and just as understandably the QPWS want to leave it where it is because they don’t consider it to be a hazard worth moving.

    What is wrong with selfhelp?
Why not a workingbee, hookup your trailers, get out the chainsaws and get a bit of exercise this weekend. Or load your boats, take it to sea and dump it.

This would be no different to living next to and abattoirs or pet food factory.

I’ve read the main and follow up stories on the Fraser Coast Chronicle website

I want to know where Averyll Loft and the writer of the 2nd story gets there information from. “one of Fraser Island’s most popular swimming beaches” is the biggest load of …. i’ve ever heard! who swims at waddy point? i’ve got pictures of idiots doing that, with a tiger shark about 2m away from them. It’s not recommended anyone swims off the eastern beaches of Fraser.

That had me wondering too Graham … perhaps the reporter who wrote that story has never actually bothered to visit the island.

Every time I’ve been over on that side of the island it’s always been way too rough for swimming … but then I sometimes wonder if backpackers and other tourists leave their brains back on the mainland.
