Council Priorities? Sometimes They Make You Wonder
Does the Fraser Coast Regional Council have its priorities right? When it comes to spending $3.25 million on a new regional art gallery Jim MacKellar doesn’t think so.
$3.25 million for a new Regional Art Gallery is in extravagance the people of the Fraser Coast can ill afford.
Especially in light of the fact that we have just spent over $1 million on stage 2 of the Art Space project in Maryborough. Would it not be more reasonable to therefore move the Regional Gallery to this location, where it will be central to the entire region?
There are two major drivers which should influence Council’s decision making at this time. We live in one of the most economically challenged regions in Australia and we are many years behind in the construction of suitable infrastructure for our ever growing population.
How does the decision to spend over $3million on an art gallery help to alleviate either of these two urgent problems?
Would $3million spent on economic development not yield a better result for the citizens of the Fraser Coast? How much additional, urgently needed, infrastructure could we obtain with this money?
The mayor says that rates will have to increase. But $3million represents approx 5% of the rates income. It may be fairly said that if the $3million is not spent on the regional Art Gallery then there will be no need for a rate increase this year.
Will the ratepayers of the Fraser Coast Region benefit more from a new art gallery or benefit more from not having to pay an increase in their rates yet again.
Its all a matter of priorities and it must be asked, do our Councillors have theirs in the right place?

Like them, love them or hate them, you elected them. All these councillors
are tried and true. You went to school with some of them, drink with them,
your children go to school with their children. Get the message?
The councillors have not stuffed up, you have.

Please do not knock the council,as they much more than you think.
they back our community with many helping hands. our arts in all areas is very important to all ages, starting from the youngest to the oldest.arts is not only about art space, its about teaching others triditions, and sharing a craft, it isabout learning from others, and instead of commputers, i for one would rather visit any art events, the money is not wasted when you put it into our children of the future, and thats what they have done.
as for our mayor, mud slinging wont help. a personal phone number has nothing to do with a conflict of intrest, this is not something for anonymous to be cercerned with, i am sure you have some sort of private life, or may be not, we have a great uni for extra teaching if it is required by some.
our roads every where ,are in development, look at the bay and open your eyes and see all the areas around you,we have a beautiful forshaw, parks, shaded areas, clean, tidy, arts, thats not a waste, education is important, our children count, with out our council hervey bay would still be dirt roads and no playgrounds for the children, or b.b.q. for your day our in the parks.
our forshaws would be littered with so much rubbish, you would get threw to he beach.
council also helps with a lot of cummunity events in the areas, so think before you speak.
if people spent more time worrying about there own business, and not others, the world would be a better place. i am happy we have a council that cares, do you want to do all the cleaning of roads on your own.
as for the rates, well its all part of the cost of housing, wages, and so on, the list goes right from a to z.
what about the phone costs, what about the price of bread and milk, what about the cost of ////// on and on. next week you will find something else to complain about, its part of being human. give it all a rest, and you will be much happier knowing that you dont have to walk to a well each day and pump your own water, as it comes right to you from the pipes that council runs for you, and out of your taps, funny that, they just all appear on ther own.
and its clean water, stranger still, and i wonder who takes care of that, so again, people shoud think about things before throwing stones, if you need something to do with your time and engery, why not be a vollentear and learn to help others, and not put them all down for trying.
from … he who throws the first stone.
