Urangan Pier

Earlier this week the Gossip reported on the work the Hervey Bay Council is carrying out to beautify the Urangan Pier Precinct.

Urangan Pier

Anyone who has lived here for more than just a few days will have seen the Urangan Pier stretching out into the bay, as it has done so for many many years. Originally built to provide a link between the district’s produce and the deep water that freighters needed that came to take that produce overseas the Pier is now a great spot for tourists and locals alike.

For the locals it’s a great place to fish and you will seldom see the end of the pier devoid of fishermen. For tourists its a chance to see the area from a totally different perspective as well as a chance to see first hand what is really an amazing engineering feat.

Even if you’re not a tourist or a fisherman the Pier is a great place to wander and enjoy the sunshine. A walk along the pier can get you up close and personal with the pelicans, you can see the fish swimming under the pier and you too can see Hervey Bay from a different perspective.

If walking the full-length of the Pier seems a little daunting there are seats provided at about the half-way point. It really is an interesting spot and one that you should not miss.

Urangan Tides

Imported from 28 May 2005

Low tide at Urangan can really be deceptive. Great expanses of sand appear around the Pier as the water level drops and it can look so inviting to four wheel drive enthusiasts.

But as the locals will tell you, when the tide turns, the water comes back fast and those expanses of dry sand quickly disappear so it can be quite a trap for the unwary.

And one four wheel drive enthusiast and his passenger found that out during the low tides this week. When they realised that the tide was on the rise again they were caught well short of the high tide mark and in the end the passenger had to run in front of the vehicle to try and find hard ground so that they could escape.

With the water lapping at the tyres they did manage to get back to dry ground but it was a very close call and should serve as a warning for anyone else who thinks that a pleasant drive out under the Pier might be a good idea.
