Sitting on Plastic Milk Containers

If you’ve ever wondered what is done with all those plastic milk containers that you’re encouraged to recycle then here’s just one of the things that all the recycled plastic is used for.

Take a walk out along the pier at Torquay here in Hervey Bay and you’ll find that this bench has been placed there by the Fraser Coast Regional Council so that you can sit back and enjoy the scenery. A sign on the bench will tell you that it contains “the equivalent of 2100 2 litre plastick milk containers.

Sunrise afterÂ a heavy shower ofÂ rain certainly added sdome interesting hues to the photo.

Bideford Street Upgrade Completed

The upgrade to Bideford Street at the shopping centre end has now been completed and is a big improvement on what the old road was like.

The Hervey Bay City Council is to be congratulated for moving with the times and working on the site at night when there was little traffic about.

Shared Pedestrian Cycleway Path to be Cut

Ongoing work by Hervey Bay Council, opposite the intersection of Bideford Street and The Esplanade, will shortly see the shared pedestrian cycleway path cut.

Signs directing users of the pathway to the other side of the street have been erected by are currently coovered.

Sailing in Hervey Bay

If like us you found the closure this week of the car park next to the sailing club in Torquay a real nuisance then perhaps you can be comforted by the thought that it was for a good cause.

Throughout the past week the Hervey Bay Sailing Club has been conducting races out in the bay to decide the 14 foot skiff titles (the oldest skiff title in the world) and the Skate titles. A total of 44 crews were in town for the races.

Racing concluded yesterday and the car park is now open for business once more.

Boating Safety Around Hervey Bay

If you’re out on the waters around Hervey Bay these holidays do be aware of the boating regulations – especially those that govern the speed at which you can travel when you’re close to the beach and around swimmers.

This hoon was on his second high speed swing through very shallow waters near the Aquavue Cafe at Torquay yesterday.

Bideford Street Roadworks

The frightful looking mess on the foreshore at the end of Bideford Street, Torquay is set for completion by the middle of December. And then we have roadworks to look forward to.

Those roadworks will commence in February and are scheduled for completion in May.

Torquay Beach Outfall

Well the mystery surrounding the work in the park opposite the intersection of Bideford Street and The Esplanade has finally been solved.

The Council were upgrading the storm water outfall and now we have a bright new eyesore to look at.

I suppose they are necessary but why do they have to be so prominent and why does an attractive beach like Torquay Beach have to be mutilated with two of these monstrosities?

Not only do they look incredibly ugly but they also obstruct people from walking up and down the beach.

I suppose we should not really be surprised but when this photo was being taken the workmen were engaged trying to cover up the ugly blot and that surely must be a labour of the utmost futility. One high tide and it will be uncovered.

I can’t help thinking that all we are doing when we add ugly lumps of concrete like this to the beachscape is destroying one of our most valuable assets.

Construction Work at Torquay

As was mentioned back on November 16 there is a considerable amount of work being done in the park opposite the intersection of The Esplanade and Bideford Street. It’s not clear what is actually being done but the work extends onto the beach and below the low tide mark.

Here is another photo of the work but this time taken at when more of the beach was visible.

High Tide at Torquay Beach

If you drive down The Esplanade at Torquay you may notice the Hervey Bay Council doing some work in the park directly opposite the Bideford Street intersection.

It’s not exactly clear what they are doing there and the Council makes no mention of it on their website but they certainly do have some earthmoving equipment in there amongst the trees. They’re also doing something down on the beach and whatever it is stretches out beyond the waterline.

This is a photo taken yesterday morning as the great pile of sand that the Council had stored on the beach was slowly washed away by the high tide.
